"You're up to no good, and we're going to come after you."

In a decisive move to bolster national security, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at dismantling the violent Venezuelan gang known as Tren de Aragua (TdA). This action underscores the administration's commitment to addressing transnational criminal organizations that threaten the safety of American communities.

The executive order, titled "Designating Cartels and Other Organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists," instructs Secretary of State Marco Rubio to designate TdA, along with other notorious groups like MS-13, as foreign terrorist organizations. This designation enhances the government's ability to combat these entities by expanding the tools available to law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

Jose Gustavo Arocha, a former high-ranking Venezuelan military official and senior fellow at the Center for a Secure Free Society, lauded the move as an "extraordinary" and "first good step" toward neutralizing TdA. He emphasized that TdA operates as an asymmetrical and unconventional tool of the Venezuelan regime, necessitating equally unconventional countermeasures.

The executive order declares a national emergency to address the threats posed by these organizations, invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). It states that these groups "present an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States."

Joseph Humire, executive director of the Center for a Secure Free Society, noted that this designation places these gangs at the highest level of U.S. national security interest. He asserted that the administration's actions send a clear message: "We know you're here; we know you're up to no good, and we're going to come after you."

The order mandates that Secretary Rubio, in consultation with other key officials, provide policy recommendations within 14 days regarding the designation of TdA, MS-13, and any other groups as foreign terrorist organizations. This swift timeline reflects the urgency with which the administration is addressing the threat posed by these violent actors.

By targeting the financial networks and support structures of these gangs, the administration aims to "bleed them dry," cutting off the resources that enable their operations. This comprehensive approach seeks to dismantle the presence and influence of TdA and similar organizations within the United States, thereby enhancing the safety and security of American citizens.

In summary, President Trump's executive order represents a proactive and strategic effort to confront and eliminate the threats posed by transnational criminal organizations. By designating these groups as foreign terrorist organizations, the administration is employing a robust framework to protect the nation from those who seek to undermine its security and well-being.

You can't reason with gang violence: you can't talk to it, sit it at the table, and negotiate with it.
